Johnson's 33 Help Women Upset Greensboro

GREENSBORO, N.C. - The NC Wesleyan College women's basketball team picked up their biggest win of the season so far by knocking off conference leader Greensboro College 89-86 on Saturday to hand the Pride their first conference loss of the season.

Sophomore guard Kayla Johnson led the Bishops with a season-high of 33 points on 6 of 10 shooting from behind the arc to help Wesleyan achieve their 4th win of the season and pull to within 2-2 in the USA South.

Wesleyan got off to a good start in the first quarter to lead 19-16 heading to the second. Johnson then drained back-to-back three pointers at the end of the first half to give the Bishops a 40-37 lead at the break. Wesleyan held Greensboro to just 22 percent shooting from three in the first half while shooting 66 percent themselves.

The Pride (10-2, 4-1) then came out firing in the third quarter to outscore the Bishops 30-21 shooting 53 percent before Wesleyan played well down the stretch going on an 8-3 run to end the game while shooting 52 percent in the fourth scoring 28 points. The Bishops outscored the Pride 28-19 in the fourth holding G-boro to just 22 percent shooting to grab the win. Wesleyan shot 47 percent from three for the game while holding the Pride to just 21.7 percent shooting from deep. 

Sophomore forward Javana Jones led the Bishops with 12 rebounds while also adding 9 points, 2 steals, and a season-best 3 blocks. Senior Nadiya Holley also added 9 points with 4 rebounds while fellow senior forward Weslie Young contributed 7 points and 9 rebounds.

Senior guard Jermaiyah Baker also finished in double-figure scoring for NCWC posting 12 points with 5 rebounds and 2 steals. Guard Keorra Taylor also led with 4 assists while sophomore Cydney Nichols added 7 points and 5 rebounds.

NC Wesleyan, now 4-9, will next be in action on Sunday afternoon to finish up their road trip at Salem College (N.C.) at 2 PM.
