Women Put Away Salem for 2-0 Weekend

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The NC Wesleyan College women's basketball team finished off their unbeaten weekend by putting away Salem College (NC) 81-74 on the road Sunday.

Wesleyan improves to 5-9 overall and 3-2 in the East Division of the USA South with the win. Stellar three-point shooting from guards Kayla Johnson and Nadiya Holley helped lead the Bishops as Holley scored a season high of 22 points to lead the team along with going 4 of 5 from three. Johnson also scored 17 while making four threes as well to go along with her 6 treys and 33 points on Saturday in the upset win over Greensboro.

Wesleyan led 22-17 after the first quarter and 41-34 at the break over the winless Spirits. After Salem (0-13) picked up their defense to hold the cold-shooting Bishops to 12 points in the third quarter to trail by just one, the Bishops found their offense again in the fourth to take it 28-22 and get the 7-point win.

Each team shot 36 percent for the game with Wesleyan making the difference by shooting the three better making 9 of them and shooting nearly 40 percent while Salem only made 6.

Wesleyan also absolutely dominated on the glass out-rebounding the Spirits 65-39 and 33-15 on the offensive end as well led by sophomore forward Javana Jones' 12 rebounds and 7 offensive. Holley also added 7 rebounds while Jones had 14 points and a block for her double-double.

Senior forward Weslie Young also added 9 rebounds with sophomore guard Keorra Taylor leading the way with 4 assists as well as adding 6 points and 2 steals.

NC Wesleyan is next in action on Wednesday when they return home to host rival Methodist University at 7 PM.
