Women Displace Methodist for 3rd Straight Win

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - The NC Wesleyan College Women's Basketball team cruised to their third straight win on Wednesday by defeating conference rival Methodist University 73-54 at home.

The Bishops improve to 6-9 overall and 4-2 in the conference with the win led by sophomore guard Kayla Johnson's 22 points.

Wesleyan got out to an 18-11 first quarter lead by shooting 42 percent and holding MU to 28 percent from the field. MU (3-10, 1-4) then came back by shooting better in the second quarter to outscore the Bishops 18-14 with Wesleyan leading by three at the break.

The Battling Bishops then poured it on offensively in the third quarter scoring 27 points to outpace the Monarchs by 15 points and take a big lead at 59-41 heading to the fourth. Wesleyan shot an impressive 50 percent overall in the third and 100 percent from three as Johnson made both of her threes while the team also shot 7 of 8 from the line in building their lead.

Wesleyan then coasted to the win in the fourth winning it 14-13 for the 19-point win. They would out rebound Methodist 44-42 overall and 18-12 on the offensive end while also recording 6 blocks in the win.

Also finishing in double-figure scoring in the win along with Johnson was fellow sophomore guard/forward Javana Jones with 12 points and 8 rebounds along with a team-high of 4 steals and two blocks. Senior forward Weslie Young also played well defensively recording a season high of 13 rebounds with two blocks while sophomore guard Cydney Nichols also posted 4 steals along with scoring 7 points and 2 assists. Senior guard Daijah Davis also had a good game scoring 8 points with 3 rebounds, 2 assists and a block. 

NCWC is next in action on Saturday as they continue their home stand when they host conference foe Averett University at 2 PM.
