Women's Win Streak Ends with Loss to Meredith

RALEIGH, N.C. - The NC Wesleyan College women's basketball team dropped their road game to nearby rival Meredith College 66-56 in Raleigh on Saturday afternoon as their 5-game win streak came to an end.

Meredith got out to a fast start holding the cold-shooting Bishops to just 6 points in the first quarter as they led 17-6 after one. Wesleyan then managed just 9 points in the second quarter as Meredith scored 16 points and shot 47 percent in the half compared to Wesleyan's 22 percent half to lead 33-15 at the break.

NCWC would then rally in the second half scoring 41 points and outscoring the Angels in each quarter including 20-13 in the fourth, but Meredith would shoot 57 percent in the third quarter and make their free throws down the stretch to hold on for the win. 

The Bishops would only make 4 threes on the day shooting just 20 percent from deep for the game as Meredith shot 46 percent from three. Wesleyan did gather more offensive boards than the Angels 19-13 led by senior Nadiya Holley's 8 total rebounds.

Sophomore guard Kayla Johnson would lead the Bishops in scoring with 10 points along with 5 boards, an assist and a steal while Holley also had 8 points, 2 assists and a steal. Sophomore guards Keorra Taylor and Cydney Nichols also each scored 9 points with Nichols also adding 4 rebounds. Sophomore forward Javana Jones also played a good all-around game leading the team in steals, assists, and blocks with 3 each along with her 4 points and 4 rebounds.

Wesleyan falls to 8-10 overall and 6-3 in the conference with the defeat while Meredith improves to 3-15 overall and 3-6 in the conference.

The Bishops are back in action on Sunday when they continue their road trip with a game at Methodist University at 3:00 PM before they return home on Wednesday evening to host Greensboro College at 7 PM.
