Bishop Women's Rally Falls Short vs. Methodist

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The NC Wesleyan College women's basketball team dropped their second consecutive conference road game over the weekend falling to rival Methodist University 69-67 on Sunday afternoon.

Wesleyan got out to a quick lead as they led 14-7 after the first. Methodist then found their shooting stroke in the second quarter as they put up 24 points by shooting 50 percent to trail the Bishops by one at the break 32-31.

Wesleyan struggled shooting from three-point range for the second straight day going just 3 of 18 (16.7%) for the game while Methodist was even worse making just 1 of 8. The difference in the game came at the free-throw line as MU made 20 of 24 freebies compared to the Bishops making just 12 of 22. Methodist outscored Wesleyan in the third 19-13 to lead 50-45 heading to the fourth. The Bishops did end the quarter on a 7-0 run to give themselves a chance.

NCWC would then outscore the Monarchs 22-19 in the fourth including a last-second three from sophomore guard Kayla Johnson but would fall 69-67 as they shot just 33 % for the game.

Johnson again led Wesleyan with 22 points along with 5 rebounds, 2 assists, 3 steals and a block as she was the only Bishop to finish in double-figure scoring. Defensively, senior forward Weslie Young played well recording a team-best 12 rebounds along with 2 blocks and a steal to go with her 8 points while senior guard Daijah Davis also led the team with 6 assists.

Sophomore guard/forward Javana Jones also added 9 points and 4 rebounds with 2 steals for the Bishops while senior guard Jermaiyah Baker also had 7 points, 8 rebounds, and 3 steals.

Wesleyan falls to 8-11 overall and 6-4 in the conference with the loss while Methodist improves to 4-14 and 2-8 in the league.

The women are next in action on Wednesday evening when they return home to host Greensboro College at 7 PM.
