Bishop Women Upset D-1 UNCG

GREENSBORO, N.C. - The NC Wesleyan College Women's Basketball team played a terrific game defensively en route to upsetting Division 1 UNC-Greensboro 52-37 on the road Monday night.

The Bishops were so impressive that they outrebounded the Spartans 64-42 and won 21-16 on the offensive glass led by 16 rebounds from forward Javana Jones.

Wesleyan was led by 8 points apiece from Jones and senior forward Myrayna Watkins as they improved to 2-0 on the young season. Watkins also added 5 rebounds and 2 steals while Jones had 8 offensive rebounds with a block and a steal.

Sophomore forward Kayrisma Harrison also had a huge game defensively recording a career high of 7 blocks along with 9 rebounds and 6 points. Senior guard Cydney Nichols had a well-balanced game also with 5 points, 7 rebounds and a team-best 6 assists while fellow senior guard Keorra Taylor had 6 points, 8 rebounds, and 2 assists. Senior Kayla Johnson also added 6 points with 4 rebounds and 2 assists.

Wesleyan led just 12-8 after the first quarter and only 21-18 at halftime. Wesleyan then pressed on the gas in the fourth quarter winning that 19-8 to grab the big win. The Bishops shot 75 percent from the free-throw line and 29 percent overall while holding UNCG to just 18 percent from the floor and only 11 percent from three. UNCG could only make 13 baskets all night against the stifling Wesleyan defense.

The Bishops, 2-0, will next continue their D-1 road schedule as they head to High Point University for a 6 PM tip on Wednesday.
