Bishop Women Hold Off Pfeiffer

MISENHEIMER, N.C. - The NC Wesleyan College women's basketball team held off Pfeiffer University to defeat their conference foe 78-71 on the road Saturday afternoon. 

The win was the Bishops' fourth straight as they improve to 8-7 overall and 6-2 in the conference. The game was moved to Pfeiffer (6-10, 2-6) at the last minute due to the winter storm in Rocky Mount. The teams will meet again on Feb. 6, but at Wesleyan this time.

The women got off to a strong start leading 22-11 after the first quarter. Pfeiffer then cut into the Bishop lead some to take the second quarter 21-14, but Wesleyan led at half 29-23. The Bishops then extended their lead to nine after the third quarter before strong free-throw shooting down the stretch would clinch the game for Wesleyan after the Falcons had trimmed it down to five. 

Wesleyan shot 43.5 percent overall and made 18 of 23 free throws while Pfeiffer shot 39 percent but made nine threes.

Junior forward Kayrisma Harrison led the Bishops with a double -double of 22 points and 16 rebounds with a block and 2 steals while senior point guard Keorra Taylor had her best game of the year scoring a season-high of 19 points to go along with 5 assists and 4 steals.

Sophomore forward Johnay Goddard also finished in double-digit scoring with 10 points off the bench along with 5 rebounds while fellow forward Nadia Simmons also tallied 8 points with 2 assists. Senior forward Javana Jones contributed 6 points and 6 boards off the bench with a season-high of 3 blocks while guards Nyesha Best and Kayla Johnson also each scored 6 points apiece.

The Bishops return to action tomorrow to host Greensboro College at 2:00 PM.
