Johnson Leads Wesleyan Women to Win

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - The NC Wesleyan College women's basketball team rolled to an 18-point win on Saturday 76-58 over conference foe Mary Baldwin University.

Senior guard Kayla Johnson continued to extend her career three-point record by knocking down five more in this one as part of her 19 points to lead all scorers.

A close first quarter saw the Bishops lead just 15-14 before they dominated the second quarter winning it 22-9 to take a 37-23 lead at the break. Johnson was perfect from three-point range in the second making all 3 of her shots. 

A high-scoring third quarter saw the Bishop women take it 24-20 to lead 61-43 heading into the fourth where then each team managed to score 15 points apiece as the Bishops shot nearly 47 percent for the game and 34 percent from three while the Squirrels were held to just 2 threes all game.

Also playing well for the Bishops was junior guard Nyesha Best scoring 10 points along with a team-best 5 assists while sophomore forward Johnay Goddard also finished with 10 points. Leading in rebounds was senior forward Javana Jones with 11 while also scoring 8 points and blocking a shot while fellow forward Kayrisma Harrison also pulled down 10 rebounds, scored 8 points and assisted on three others. 

Sophomore forward Nadia Simmons then led the team with 4 steals while registering 7 points and 3 rebounds while guards Areina Harris and Myesha Best combined for 12 points off the bench in the win.

Wesleyan improves to 10-9 on the season and 8-4 in the conference while MBU falls to 9-7 overall and 5-5 in the East.

The Bishops return to action on Tuesday when they head south to Methodist to battle the Monarchs in a 7 pm tip.
