Women's Rally Falls Short at Greensboro

GREENSBORO, N.C. - The NC Wesleyan College women's basketball team rallied back from an 18-point second half deficit to take the lead late as part of their season-high 58-point half only to fall short 87-84 on a last second three from the second-place Greensboro Pride.

Wesleyan trailed 66-48 with just under three minutes to play in the third quarter before going on a 12-4 to get to within 10 points at the end of three. This was part of Wesleyan's season-high 34-point quarter. The Bishops then continued their quality play in the fourth quarter going on a 24-10 run to lead 84-82 on Kayrisma Harrison's layup with 30 seconds to play. Unfortunately, GC would make a three and two free throws to hang on for the win.

GC got up 16-7 on the Bishops in the first quarter and then took the second 26-19 to lead 42-26 at the break. The Bishops then came out firing in the second half shooting a remarkable 75 percent in the third quarter while going perfect from the three-point arc to outscore the Pride 34-28. NCWC then shot 43 percent in the fourth, but missed all their threes while GC made 11 treys compared to the Bishops only making four total for the game. Wesleyan did make 30 free throws on the afternoon setting a season-high as well.

The Bishops were led by a season-high 20 points from sophomore forward Nadia Simmons along with 7 rebounds and 4 assists. Guard Keorra Taylor was also a part of the quintet of women in double-figures scoring 16 points with 4 rebounds and a team-best five assists. Harrison also scored 12 points along with team-highs in rebounds with 10, steals with two and blocks with four.

Also finishing in double-digit points were forwards Javana Jones and sophomore Johnay Goddard off the bench. Goddard scores 10 while Jones had 11 and 9 rebounds. Senior guard Kayla Johnson also scored 9 points on three treys while sophomore guard Areina Harris added six points.

Wesleyan falls to 11-10 overall and 9-5 in the conference and remains in 3rd place while GC improves to 21-1 overall and 14-1 in the East. The women return to action Sunday at home hosting Pfeiffer at 2:00 pm.
