Lacrosse Drops Home Finale to Piedmont at new Field

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C.  - The NC Wesleyan College lacrosse team dropped their home finale 15-2 to conference foe Piedmont University on Sunday in their second game ever on Don Stallings Field at the Vernon T. Bradley, Jr. Stadium.

The Lady Bishops were led by sophomore attacker Nakayla Chatman as she scored both goals for Wesleyan. She first scored in the 2nd quarter off an assist from senior midfielder Madeline Graham before scoring again in the 4th quarter off a Blaire Harley assist.

Piedmont jumped out to a fast start scoring six unanswered goals in the first quarter before adding three more in the 2nd until Wesleyan finally got on the board late in the period. PU took a 10-1 lead into the halftime break. Only one goal was scored in the third quarter by the Lions before they then added four more in the fourth for the big win.

Leading in draw control wins was Harley with three while she also picked up four ground balls. Graham also collected 4 ground balls while winning two draws , causing a turnover and attempting a team-high five shots.

Defender Emily Sullivan also picked up 3 GBs for the Bishops and forced two PU turnovers while fellow defender Naomi Gitahi had two GBs and two caused turnovers. Senior defender Karlee Bjurstrom also won two draws and picked up two GBs while sophomore goalie Devin Bautz made 6 saves on 21 shots.

The Bishops fall to 4-11 overall and 3-5 in the conference while Piedmont improves to 7-7 and 4-3 in the league.

Wesleyan will next go back on the road to battle Methodist on Saturday at 3:00 PM.
