Bishops Run Past Quakers in Season Opener, 2-0

Rocky Mount, N.C. - The women's soccer team of N.C. Wesleyan opened its 2014 slate on Friday afternoon with a 2-0 victory over Guilford College at Scalf Field. After fighting to a scoreless tie at the break, sophomore Sarah Olsowski and freshman Hannah Tolson each netted goals early in the second half to give the Bishops a lead they would not relinquish.

Wesleyan dominated play in the first half, out-shooting the Quakers 8-1 in the period. The Bishops' best scoring opportunity came on a Rebecca Staylor shot off the crossbar that was headed out-of-bounds in the 24th minute.

NCWC would not be denied in the second half, however, as Olsowski connected on a cross from sophomore Logan Bill just 31 seconds into the period. Less than five minutes later, the freshman-to-freshman connection of Tolson and Julia Rebellon scored on a similar play on the left side.

Wesleyan held a 15-3 advantage in shots on the day, including a 5-2 edge in corners. Junior goalie Vanessa Batchelor made one save en route to her first shutout of the season, while GC keeper Becca Banks made five saves in the match.

The Bishops (1-0) continue play on Saturday at Randolph-Macon at 1:00pm.
