Bishop Women Fight to 1-1 OT Draw at Greensboro

Greensboro, N.C. - The Battling Bishop women's soccer team fought to a 1-1 double overtime draw at Greensboro College on Sunday afternoon in USA South play. Senior Rebecca Staylor's unassisted score in the 16th minute looked as though it would hold up, but the Pride's Allison Gibson netted the equalizer with 1:39 left in regulation to force OT.

Staylor's goal came at the 15:51 mark when she broke free down the right side for her only shot of the match. Freshmen keepers Ashley Major and Sarah Hovis made that lead stand over the next 73 minutes, but Gibson's goal in the 89th minute sent the Bishops into their first overtime game of the season.

In the first OT, freshman Julia Rebellon narrowly missed the Golden Goal with a shot off the crossbar less than two minutes in. Hovis (1-0-1) proceeded to make a key save in the second overtime to secure the tie. She and Major finished with a combined five stops on the day.

For the match, the Pride held a 14-9 lead in shots and a slim 3-2 edge in corners.

The draw came on the heels of a 4-0 loss to Maryville on Friday at home. The Scots scored a trio of second half goals on a series of defensive miscues en route to the win.

Wesleyan (5-3-1, 1-1-1 USA South) returns home to host league foe Methodist University on Wednesday afternoon. The match is slated for a 4:00pm start at Scalf Field.
