Bishop Women End Season in USA South Semifinals

Martinsville, Va. - The N.C. Wesleyan women's soccer team ended its 2014 season with a heartbreaking 2-1 overtime loss to Methodist University in the semifinals of the USA South Conference Tournament on Friday. The Monarchs scored just two minutes into the extra period to advance to Saturday's title match versus Maryville. The Bishops end their best season in over a decade with a 10-6-3 overall record and say farewell to seniors Jade Gold, Danielle Hickman and Rebecca Staylor.

The match was nearly identical to the two teams' regular season match-up that, too, saw Methodist steal a 2-1 OT victory. The 7th-seeded Bishops were hoping for a different outcome on Friday, although it would be the Monarchs who took an early 1-0 lead with a goal by Decaysha Miller in the 10th minute.

Wesleyan tied the score at 1-1 with just 37 seconds remaining in the first half. Staylor served a ball over the top to junior Sarah Olsowski, who delivered a perfect cross to senior Gold for the one-timer. The assist gave Staylor the 100th point of her Bishop career, making her just the third Bishop in program history to accomplish the feat.

The Monarchs held a slim 5-4 edge in shots in the second half, but neither team could net a gamewinner. In overtime, MU's Victoria Martins took the first and only shot of the period from roughly 30 yards, and it would find the back of the net to advance the Monarchs to Saturday's championship.

Methodist finished with a 11-9 advantage in shots and 3-2 lead in corners. Monarch keeper Taylor Ross made a trio of saves en route to the win in net, while Bishop freshman Sarah Hovis notched four stops on the day. The match ended a string of six straight defensive shutouts by N.C. Wesleyan, which tied the Battling Bishops' all-time record for consecutive shutouts in women's soccer.

For her efforts, Olsowski was named to the 2014 USA South All-Tournament team in the midfield.
