Rocky Mount, N.C. - Wesleyan honored its 2016 senior class on Wednesday afternoon prior to a league match-up with Averett University. The Bishops went on to post a dominating 4-0 shutout of the Cougars at Scalf Field.

Out to avenge back-to-back 2-1 losses in conference play, Wesleyan was impressive from the start, tallying the first 11 shots of the match. Averett's offense looked to organize late in the half, but Bishop keeper Ashley Major made a pair of saves on two Cougar shots-on-goal. Her offense then responded with a goal by Lauren Seegel from Marissa Aguilar in the 40th minute.

It was all Bishops in the second half as Wesleyan tallied a trio of goals on eight shots. Freshman Victoria Burkhart found Aguilar with a through ball of the corner for a 2-0 lead less than five minutes into the half. Jordan Forbess and Diamond Ridgeway later added insurance goals in the 70th and 86th minutes to provide the 4-0 final. Madeline Williams and Cali Green were credited with assists.

Major made two more stops in the final period to secure her seventh shutout of the season. Wesleyan held a 23-9 lead in shots on the day, 12 of which were on frame. The Bishops also held a 7-3 edge in corners.

The match marked the final regular season home game for four-year seniors Ashley Sankner, Logan Bill, LeAnnza Ussery, and Brittany McGraw. The four were instrumental in the win... Bill and Sankner combined for five shots, while Ussery and McGraw helped anchor the defensive effort.

NCWC (8-4-1, 7-3 USA South) had previously dropped a heartbreaking 2-1 double overtime decision to Meredith College on Tuesday. Honoring its 2016 Breast Cancer Awareness day, Wesleyan's Ella Burkhart forced OT when she netted the equalizer with just 58 seconds remaining in regulation. The junior's shot was unassisted from 35 yards out.

NCWC twice narrowly missed Golden Goals on a pair of rockets by the Burkhart sisters, but MC did not miss on its third shot attempt of the second overtime. Cassie Padilla touched home a Meredith McCarty corner kick to give the Angels a 2-1 win, despite Wesleyan holding a 15-13 shot advantage.

MC keeper Jaisa Loch finished with six saves on the day, while Major made four stops.

Wesleyan returns to action on Saturday and Sunday at Ferrum and Mary Baldwin, respectively. Saturday's match at Ferrum is slated for 11:00am and features the top two teams in the USA South's East Division.
