Greensboro, N.C. - Senior Ella Burkhart notched a goal and an assist on Wednesday afternoon to help her 6th-seeded Battling Bishops upset 3rd-seeded Greensboro by a 2-1 score in the opening round of the USA South Tournament. Wesleyan advances to Saturday's quarterfinal round where the Bishops will take on 2nd-seeded Meredith College in Raleigh.

Wednesday's match saw the Pride (16-3) get on the board in the 16th minute when a 30-yard free kick by Anna Rae Porcelli beat keeper Ashley Major top left. Greensboro would make its 1-0 lead stand for the remainder of the half, but Burkhart managed to erase Wesleyan's deficit early in the second, netting the equalizer with an unassisted score at the 57:53 mark.

From there, the remainder of regulation was evenly played with both goalies making key saves to preserve the tie. Just when the match seemed destined for overtime, however, Burkhart found freshman Cydney Nichols for the eventual gamewinner with just over five minutes remaining. The Bishop defense proceeded to fight off a pair of Pride cornerkicks down the stretch -- the latter resulting in a shot-on-goal that saw Major tally her third save of the match to seal the 2-1 victory.

The Bishops (6-10-1) out-shot the Pride 10-8 on the day, although Greensboro held a 6-1 advantage in corners.

Saturday's quarterfinal action is slated for a 3:00pm start at Meredith. The Avenging Angels (12-4) narrowly edged Wesleyan by a 1-0 score in last Tuesday's regular season match-up in Raleigh. The Bishops will enter the match riding a 4-game winning streak that has seen them out-score their opponents 13-2 during that span.
