Women's Soccer Falls Short in Weekend Games

ROCKY MOUNT, NC- The NC Wesleyan College women's soccer team dropped consecutive 1-0 games over the weekend to non-conference opponents. They first fell to Stockton University (N.J.) at home on Saturday afternoon. They then could not find the back of the net in falling 1-0 again on Sunday to Guilford College (NC) in a neutral-site game in Raleigh.

An early goal 8 minutes into the game on Saturday, the Ospreys of Stockton were able to jump on the board early and then kept the Bishops scoreless throughout the rest of the game outshooting Wesleyan 13-3 in the process but just 4-2 in the second half. 

Sophomore goalkeeper Alicia Jacobs led NCW by making five saves on six shots on goal while senior forward Maggie Rankin and sophomore defender Manuela Cano led with shots on goal.

On Sunday in Raleigh, Guilford (1-3) got their goal in the 54th minute of action after a scoreless first half. NCW led 5-4 in shots in the first half and then piled on 11 shots in the second half outshooting the Quakers 11-5 but could not break through for the tying goal. Jacobs also made five saves on six shots on goal again.

Leading in shots was junior forward Sarah Cook with 7 and six on goal while Cano and Rankin also produced two shots on goal.

Making the Meredith Classic all-Tournament team for the Lady Bishops were junior defender Victoria Burkhart, senior forward Madeline Williams, and Jacobs for her 10 saves on the weekend.

NCWC falls to 1-2-1 on the season and will next be on the road to continue non-conference play next Saturday and Sunday at Southern VA University and Bridgewater College.
