Bishop Women Fall to #8 Amherst in Second Round of NCAA Tourney

Fredericksburg, Va. - The Battling Bishop women's tennis team saw a remarkable 2018 season come to an end on Saturday with a 5-0 loss to Amherst College in the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament hosted by the University of Mary Washington. The Bishops, who had previously posted an opening round sweep of Lebanon Valley College on Friday to advance, wrap up the spring with a 13-4 overall record.

Versus Lebanon Valley on Friday, Wesleyan opened up a 3-0 lead in doubles play as the duos of Stephany Barbera/Talitha RowanNicole Halabi/Giulia Zanetti, and Florencia Sorrentino/Ana Aguilar all dominated in 8-0 shutouts. Rowan brought NCWC to within a point of the team win with a 6-1, 6-0 win at #4 singles, while Aguilar clinched the match with a 6-2, 6-0 victory at #6. Sorrentino, Zanetti, Halabi, and Barbera were all up a set in their respective matches when play was halted at 5-0.

With the victory, the Bishops advanced to face 8th-ranked Amherst on Saturday. The Mammoths cruised to 8-1 and 8-0 wins at #1 and #3 doubles, while NCWC's Halabi/Zanetti went the distance with the AC duo of Vickie Ip/Kelsey Chen at the #2 seed, eventually falling by a tight 8-6 score. Amherst went on to post straight-set wins at #1 and #4 to clinch the match. Playing at #2, Zanetti was Wesleyan's lone player to take a set in singles action, downing Ip 6-2 in the first set prior to stoppage in play.

The match marked the end of the stellar career of Sorrentino, who graduates with the most doubles wins in program history (36).
