Women's Tennis Fall to Averett and Shaw at Home

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - The NC Wesleyan College women's tennis team fell 7-0 to conference foe Averett at home on Wednesday before falling to Shaw later in the day 8-0.

The doubles duo of sophomore Elisa Mariotti and freshman Isabella Gastelumendi fell 8-2 at the top line while the duo of senior Chandler Brice and junior Miguelina Paiva fell 8-1 at the two line. 

Mariotti then lost a heartbreaker at the top line winning the first set 6-2 before falling 3-6, 8-10 while Gastelumendi lost 2-6, 5-7 at the two line. Brice lost the first set 3-6 before having to retire while Paiva fell 6-0, 6-1. 

Averett improves to 10-4 overall and 7-0 in conference while the Bishops fall to 1-9 and 1-5.

The Bishops next battled Shaw University at 6:00 PM at the Slick Family Outdoor Courts. In the Shaw match, Gastelumendi and Brice lost a close battle at the #2 doubles line going down 8-5. Mariotti and freshman Kristal Dule then lost a tough match 8-2 at the top doubles line.

In the singles matches, Mariotti fell 6-3, 6-4 in the close match as she lost her lead late in the second set. After Brice and Paiva lost in straight sets, Dule and Gastelumendi were forced to retire in their matches.

The Lady Bishops drop to 1-10 overall while Shaw improves to 12-3.

Wesleyan will now remain home to host Greensboro and Mount Olive on Saturday.
