Women Sprinters Compete at Mount Olive and Emory Last Chance Qualifiers; Brooks Earns Bid to Nationals in 100M

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. - The NC Wesleyan University women's track team competed at the Mount Olive First Chance NCAA Qualifier Meet this past Saturday as they look to earn their spot to Nationals next week.

Freshman Rookie of the Year Mariah Brooks led the Lady Bishops with her 4th place finish in the 100 meter finals running a time of 12.1 seconds. Her prelim time was a strong 11.98 seconds which also saw her place fourth as she qualified for Nationals with her time. Teammates Teanna Bellamy and Assata Sirleaf also competed in the 100 meter prelims. Bellamy finished 11th in 12.96 seconds while Sirleaf was 14th in 13.5 seconds.

Then, in the 200 meter finals, Brooks finished 2nd out of 7 runners with a time of 25.16 seconds falling just a second behind the winner. Brooks will wait until Friday night to find out if she qualified in the 200.

The women then finally finished out their qualifying season with a final chance meet at Emory College in Atlanta on Wednesday.

Brooks was the only Bishop to compete in the final meet as she ran a 100 meter preliminary time of 11.91 seconds to qualify fourth in the finals. 

Then, in the finals Mariah finished 5th out of 8 sprinters with a time of 12.08 seconds. 

Brooks will now compete in the NCAA Outdoor Championships at Mount Union Univ. in Geneva, OH on Friday, May 27 running her prelim of the 100 meters at 3:30 PM. The final would then be run on Saturday afternoon.
