Volleyball Bishops Suffer Trio of USA South Losses

Rocky Mount, N.C. - The Battling Bishop volleyball team of N.C. Wesleyan suffered a trio of USA South losses this week, beginning with a road sweep at Meredith on Wednesday and ending with a pair of tough defeats versus Ferrum and Averett at home on Saturday. Despite the losses, sophomore Tori Stewart faired well statistically with a team-best 23 kills and 8 blocks over the three-match span.

Versus Meredith on Wednesday, set scores were 25-23, 25-11 and 25-20. Stewart and teammate Beth Bradham each notched nine kills for the Bishops, with Bradham posting a team-best .474 hitting percentage.

In Saturday's first tilt, Ferrum came out on top in a tightly-contested match from the start. Set scores were 25-21, 17-25, 25-22 and 25-22. Looking to even the match at two sets apiece, the Bishops forged a 13-8 lead in the fourth only to see the Panthers push ten straight points for an 18-13 advantage. Wesleyan got no closer than two points the rest of the way.

Stewart managed ten kills and six blocks, while setters Kayla White and Ayla Brewer combined for 29 assists. Evie Hunter, Alani Wiggins and Emily McLain recorded seven kills each for the Bishops, who totaled 42 as a team. Defensively, libero Christina Huber turned in a match-high 27 digs.

In the final match of the day, a talented Averett squad dominated Wesleyan (25-25, 25-4, 25-8). The Cougars turned in a remarklable .562 hitting percentage with 45 kills against just four errors on the match.

Wesleyan (2-12, 1-5 USA South) will host league rival Methodist University on Wednesday night. The match is slated for a 7:00pm start in Everett Gymnasium.
