Bishops Split Two Pair of League Matches in Everett Gymnasium

Rocky Mount, N.C. - N.C. Wesleyan's volleyball team hosted its USA South play days over the weekend, going 2-2 over four matches versus Maryville, Salem, Covenant, and Wesleyan (Ga.). All four matches were sweeps, with the Bishops' two wins coming against Salem and Wesleyan.

Versus Maryville on Friday, the Bishops were swept 3-0 (25-19, 25-12, 27-25). Wesleyan looked to force a fourth set, fighting off a trio of match points in the third before falling 27-25 on a Brianne Sidner kill. NCWC won the blocking battle 9-6 in the match, but the Scots made up the difference with 39 kills to NCWC's 30.

Tori Stewart racked up ten kills and Ashley Williams eight for the Bishops, while Emily McLain notched five blocks. Current USA South Defensive Player of the Week Christina Huber continued her solid play with a match-high 19 digs.

The Bishops wrapped up Friday's action with a 3-0 sweep of their own over Salem (27-25, 28-26, 25-23). All three sets were nailbiters as both teams were solid offensively. Wesleyan finished with 51 kills and a .299 hitting percentage, while the Spirits put down 43 kills at a .284 clip.

Autumn Spence and Samantha Morton tallied 12 kills each, while Stewart chipped in 11 thanks to 45 assists from senior setter Ayla Brewer. Defensively, Huber and freshman Hannah Huls combined for 27 digs.

After suffering a 3-0 loss to Covenant in Saturday's first match (25-16, 25-15, 25-22), the Bishops bounced back with a sweep of the Wolves (25-7, 25-8, 25-10). Freshman Hannah Thrasher notched a team-best six kills, with Catelyn Cink dishing out six assists.

Next up for the Bishops (7-12, 5-3 USA South) is a Wednesday night home tilt with USA South rival William Peace University. The match is slated for a 7:00pm start in Everett Gymnasium.
