Bishops Down Ferrum for First USA South Victory, 3-1

Rocky Mount, N.C. - N.C. Wesleyan's volleyball squad picked up its first USA South victory on Friday afternoon with a 3-1 victory over Ferrum in Everett Gym. Unfortunately, the Bishops were swept by Salem to close out the evening.

Versus Ferrum, set scores were 25-23, 25-13, 25-27, and 25-18. Wesleyan racked up double-digit kills in all four sets, and the Bishops narrowly missed a sweep after the Panthers fought off match point in the third.

Leading the way statistically for Wesleyan were senior Samantha Morton and sophomore Autumn Spence with a match-high 14 kills apiece. Freshman Callie Cline continued her solid all-around play with 13 kills, 29 digs, and 5 service aces, while sophomore setter Haileigh Riesenbeck dished out a season-high 48 assists. As a team, NCWC recorded 10 total blocks (5 solo, 10 assists).

Against Salem, set scores were 25-16, 25-21, and 25-19. The Bishops fell victim to 20 attack errors as a team, while the Spirits countered with 42 kills against just 12 errors of their own.

Spence again reached double-digit kills with 10, and Cline led the defensive effort with a team-high 20 digs.

Wesleyan (3-7, 1-2 USA South) continues conference play next Tuesday night at home when the Bishops host Meredith College at 7:00pm.
