Rocky Mount, N.C. - Freshman Callie Cline racked up 17 kills and 20 digs over two matches to lead her Battling Bishops to a split in Saturday's volleyball action in Everett Gym. Wesleyan fell to Averett by a 3-0 score in the opener before rallying to record a sweep of its own over Pfeiffer in the finale.

The Bishops gave the league-leading Cougars (20-2, 8-0 USA South) all they could handle in the first match of the day, falling by 25-23, 25-20, and 25-11 scores. Tied 23-23 in the opening set, Averett took the pivotal 1-0 lead on a pair of Bishop miscues on the last two points. As a team, Wesleyan recorded a match-high 14 kills against no errors in the set.

Set two also proved to be a back-and-forth affair. With the Cougars clinging to a 23-20 lead, the Bishops again ended the set on a pair of unforced errors to give AU a 2-0 advantage. The Cougars then put the match away with their best hitting performance of the day in the third, notching 13 kills against four errors for a .300 percentage.

AU's Hannah Sheilds led all players with 11 kills in the match, while Cline put down eight kills for NCWC. Cline also added 14 digs and Haileigh Riesenbeck 14 assists for the Bishops.

Against Pfeiffer (1-14), the Bishops were 25-13, 26-24, and 25-6 winners. After cruising to a 1-0 match lead in the first, the Bishops found themselves facing a pair of set points in the second. Down 24-22, however, the Bishops pushed four straight points to steal the win thanks to a pair of Falcon errors that sandwiched kills by senior Emily McLain and freshman Jordan Sakry.

Cline again paced the Bishops with a match-high nine kills, while sophomore Hannah Hulls anchored the defensive effort with 13 digs. Riesenbeck and sophomore setter Kelly Ammons combined for 31 assists for the Bishops, who tallied 37 kills as a team.

Wesleyan (5-12) continues play on Tuesday at non-conference rival Virginia Wesleyan. The match is slated for a 7:00pm start in Virginia Beach.
