Volleyball Drops Tri-Match at Averett as Riesenbeck picks up 1,000th assist

DANVILLE, Va.- The NC Wesleyan Volleyball team unfortunately dropped both ends of their conference tri-match with Averett (Va.) and Methodist (N.C.) on Saturday afternoon in Danville. However, on a positive note, junior setter Haileigh Riesenbeck picked up her 1,000th career assist in the defeat as well.

Averett 3, NC Wesleyan 0

Wesleyan first faced Averett (10-10, 6-4 USA SOUTH) and fell 7-25, 18-25, and 10-25 as Averett played almost perfect hitting-wise making just 9 attack errors along with 42 kills as they hit .303.

Sophomore OH Callie Cline led in both kills and digs on the game registering 4 kills and 12 digs while adding a block assist as well. Freshman right side hitter Sydney Barnwell also added 3 kills, 3 digs, 2 assists, two blocks, and an ace in the game. Junior DS Hannah Huls also picked up 11 digs while junior setter Kelly Ammons then added 5 assists and 6 digs.

Methodist 3, NC Wesleyan 1

In the rematch with Methodist (11-7, 5-5 USA SOUTH), Wesleyan would win the second set, but go on to lose the match in 4 sets, 24-26, 25-21, 19-25, and 12-25.

Wesleyan had more kills than the Monarchs in the first set, 15-14 and hit .195 but Methodist made less errors as they picked up the set. The Bishops then hit .195 again in the second set behind 13 kills to get the second set before MU came back in the third with 13 kills hitting .189 for the win and go on to dominate the final set for the victory.

Riesenbeck and Cline led the offense recording double-doubles each with Riesenbeck leading with 39 assists and 11 digs with a kill and an ace while Cline added 11 kills and a team-high 19 digs.

Junior outside hitter Autumn Spence then led the attack with 12 kills hitting .219 while junior middle Hannah Thrasher also added 7 kills hitting .182. Freshmen Lauren Weaver and Sydney Barnwell also combined for 13 kills and 2 digs while freshman libero Devin Lassiter added 19 digs with 3 assists and an ace. Huls and freshman DS Mary Catherine Davis also collected a combined 26 digs.

The Bishops fall to 8-17 overall and 3-8 in the USA South and are next in action on the road Wednesday at conference leader Meredith College (16-3, 11-0).
