Volleyball Battles Tough but falls at Salem & Greensboro

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.- The NC Wesleyan College Volleyball team dropped a tough tri-match with Salem (N.C.) and Greensboro College (N.C.) on Saturday falling in three sets at Salem and 4 to Greensboro.

Salem squeaked out a three set win taking the sets by scores of 25-22, 25-23, and 25-21 while GC edged the Bishops 25-20, 22-25, 26-24, and 25-22.

SALEM 3, NCWC 0

Wesleyan hit .111 vs. Salem (11-11, 9-5) with 36 kills and 82 digs led by a team-high 10 kills from freshman right side Sydney Barnwell as she hit .296 with 4 digs. Sophomore OH Callie Cline also added 8 kills, 15 digs, 2 assists, an ace and a block while junior setter Haileigh Riesenbeck registered a double-double of 21 assists and 12 digs.

Freshman Libero Devin Lassiter also led the team with 20 digs with an assist while junior DS Hannah Huls added   16 digs. Middle blockers Hannah Thrasher and Lauren Weaver also combined for 11 kills and 3.5 blocks.

GREENSBORO 3, NCWC 1

In their second match of the day, the Lady Bishops fought hard against the Pride (4-19, 3-10) totaling 53 kills and hitting .141 while GC had 55 and hit .191 but fell short. GC dominated the 3rd and 4th sets on the attack totaling 33 kills and just 5 errors to close the match.

Junior OH Autumn Spence played very well for the bishops leading the team with 16 kills with just 3 errors to hit .342 along with 3 digs. Riesenbeck then added her second straight double-double of 24 assists and 13 digs with two aces while Barnwell also posted a double double of 10 kills and 17 assists along with an ace and 6 digs.

Weaver also added 11 kills with a dig and two blocks as the Bishops put 3 ladies in double-figure kills. Thrasher and Cline would also combine for 15 kills while Cline added a team-high 25 digs, an ace, and a block. 

NCWC falls to 8-20 overall and 3-11 in the conference with the defeats and will now return home for a non-conference game on Tuesday night vs. Virginia Wesleyan University at 7 PM.
