Bishop Volleyball Cruises Past MBU for First Two Wins

STAUNTON, VA - The NC Wesleyan College women's volleyball team cruised to their first two wins of the year on Saturday defeating conference foe Mary Baldwin University 3-0 in each match.

Wesleyan won the first conference match of the day 25-21, 25-12, and 25-17 behind 40 total kills for the match led by a team-high 12 from junior middle Lauren Weaver as she hit at a .296 clip. She also had 5 digs and two blocks while senior outside hitter Callie Cline also played well tallying 9 kills and 17 digs.

Fellow senior right side hitter Augusta Preston aso played her best match of the season so far totaling 8 kills with only 2 errors hitting 214 with 9 digs while senior leibero Sam Butensky led the Lady Bishops with 23 digs. Freshman setter Sloan Martin then led the team with 33 assists along with 3 kills, 8 digs, and an ace. 

Wesleyan increased their hitting percentage in each game going from .132 to .178 to .217 in the final game while sophomore RS Michaela Seawell finished with 6 kills and 13 digs as well.

In the second match of the day, Wesleyan ousted the Squirrels by scores of 25-21, 25-23, and 25-20 in a more competitive match with head coach Vicky Gentile playing more of her team in the non-conference affair. Wesleyan totaled 38 kills in this one hitting .214 overall including a terrific 16 kills on only 3 errors in the second set hitting .317.

Wesleyan was led again by Weaver who had a season-high 14 kills with only 2 errors hitting .522 in the game with an ace, an assist and a block assist. Freshman middle Mary Alice Butler also played well tallying 7 kills with 3 blocks hitting .375.

Junior OH Bijou Patel had a good game as well finishing with 8 kills, 5 digs and a blocks while Butensky totaled 22 digs again as the libero with 3 assists. Martin also finished with 13 assists, 9 digs and a kill while fellow freshman setter Desiree Walker also had 9 assists and a kill.

Wesleyan improves to 2-7 overall on the year and 1-4 in the conference while MBU falls to 0-9.
