Women's XC Wins Historic D3 Title at Greensboro

GREENSBORO, N.C.- The NC Wesleyan women's cross country team finished first among D3 schools at the Greensboro Invitational on Saturday at Hagan Stone Park. The women beat D2 Livingstone and D3s Randolph College, Peace, and Averett Universities. It was the Ladies' first win in school history.

Wesleyan finished 6th overall among the other D1 and D2 schools.

"The women's team took home the D3 Championship and this win is the 1st ever win the program's history," said Coach Leonard.  "I am very excited and proud of these girls.  It is fun to see them have some success along the way to becoming the program we want to be.

"These wins represent the 1st wins EVER in the Cross Country programs history.  This is an exciting time as we are creating a winning culture."

Leading the way for the Lady Bishops was senior Sarah Grossman in 26th overall in 26:13 while freshman Olivia Pittman was 27th in 26:28. Freshman Alyssa Donaldson was then 30th in 27:09 while sophomore Ali Cucinotta then came in 4th on the team and 36th overall in 28:21. Freshman Michelle Sackey-Ansah then completed the scoring by finishing 48th in 37:12. Sophomore Hana Funadaiku then placed 55th overall as an individual running a time of 38:08.

Grossman was third among D3 runnners while Pittman finished 4th. Donaldson was 5th and Cucinotta 8th with Sackey coming in 16th and Funadaiku 17th in D3.

Next weekend the team will be racing at the ESPN campus at Disney on Saturday.  They will be racing D1, D2, and D3 teams while being televised on ESPN3 for everyone to see.  Leonard said, "I am excited for our team and the potential for both teams."
