NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Christopher Newport men's tennis program opened the 2019-20 season this weekend as they played host to the CNU Invitational. The Captains picked up eight singles victories on day one and one doubles win. 

In doubles action, newcomers Bently Goodwin and Matthew Dubuque earned a thrilling 8-7 (5) win over Division I opponents from Hampton University Fernandes and Dwyer. They advance in the B Flight Doubles bracket and will return to action on Sunday. 

Dubuque also picked up his first collegiate win in singles play when he outlasted a North Carolina Wesleyan played in the tiebreaker. He captured a 6-3, 4-6, 10-8 win in the D flight opening round. Goodwin also earned his first collegiate singles victory with a 6-2, 6-1 win over North Carolina Wesleyan's Robinson in C Flight. 

Veterans Andy Mason and Dominic Lacombe each added a win for the Captains, as did Ryan Macy, newcomer Scotty Hunter, James Baron, and Mason Kolls. 

Action will conclude at the CNU Invitational on Sunday. Results will be posted at CNUsports.com.
