CNU Baseball Announces Game Time Change for Wednesday; Captains Host No. 7 N.C. Wesleyan at 2:00 pm

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- In anticipation of poor weather Wednesday evening, the Christopher Newport baseball team announced a game-time change for it's matchup with No. 7 North Carolina Wesleyan College. The Captains (10-7) are now set to throw out the first pitch at Captains Park at 2:00 p.m.

The game will be the fourth straight against an opponent ranked in the nation's top-10 and that run will continue on Friday when the Captains welcome the Battling Bishops back for the second game this week. The two teams played earlier this season when CNU suffered a 6-3 setback to the then 24th-ranked Bishops on March 12.

North Carolina Wesleyan is riding a six-game winning streak as the Bishops have improved to 23-3 overall this season. Wednesday's matchup will be the first of five games for the Captains this week with two against NCWC and three this weekend against Mary Washington.

The Bishops are among the most patient teams in the nation ranking seventh in walks and they have made opponents pay for the free passes by ranking 15th nationally in stolen bases. Tyson Bass leads the team in both categories with 26 walks and 13 stolen bases this season while hitting .295 as a freshman. Sophomore Davie Morgan is hitting .374 with a team-leading four home runs and 36 RBI while senior Brad Pennington is hitting .343 with 28 runs batted in.

The Captains counter with sophomore Kyle Schofield leading the charge, hitting .362 with eight extra-base hits and a .569 slugging percentage. Senior Eric O'Brien is hitting .349 and leads the team in RBI with 20 while Conner Clark is 9-for-10 on the basepaths while scoring 20 times as the Captains' lead-off hitter.

On the mound, Josh Husby (4-0) and Dylan Weber (3-2) have combined for 13 of the Captains 17 starts this season. Jay Cassady (0-2) has three of the remaining four as CNU heads into the busy week with five games over five days. Husby has been exceptional in his final campaign, posting a 1.66 ERA and 36 strikeouts in 38.0 innings of work. Weber has struck out 32 in 30.2 innings while leading the team in total starts with seven. Out of the pen, rookie Matt Gaither (2-1, 1 SV) has been nearly invincible in all but one of his nine appearances, allowing just two earned over 11.0 innings of relief in those showings.

The Bishops have been led by Derrick Carter (6-0) on the mound with a 2.81 ERA in over 51 innings pitched. Kevin Williams (3-1, 3 SV) headlines the bullpen group with 34 K in 32.0 innings while posting a team-best 2.53 ERA.

Live stats and live video will be available for all the action at CNUsports.com. The CNU Outdoor Spectator Policy will be in effect with limited fans in attendance.
