Bishops Cruise Past MBU 17-8 and 13-2

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - The NC Wesleyan College baseball cruised to a game two win 17-8 over Mary Baldwin on Sunday afternoon in the first game of the Senior Day doubleheader from Bauer Field.

The Bishops then finished off the series sweep with a 13-2 win in game three later Sunday.

GAME 2: NCWC 17, MBU 8

The Bishops got out to a 3-0 lead in this one scoring on a Davie Morgan RBI double and a Zach Lyon RBI single as well as a wild pitch. Morgan's RBI single in the 2nd made it 4-0 before MBU clawed two runs off Bishop starter Danny Thompson in the 3rd. 

Wesleyan then sent 12 men to the plate in the third while scoring 8 runs in the third to take a 12-2 lead. Catcher Jean Lagreca led it off with a RBI single before coming around to score on an error. 3B Jackson Hobbs then cleared the bases with a 3-run triple before RBI singles from DH Blake Scott and Lagreca and a sacrifice fly from 1B Nate Hibbs completed the scoring.

MBU then cut into the Bishop lead with a 5-run 4th inning to knock Thompson out of the game. Thompson finished throwing 3 and 2/3 innings allowing 7 runs on 3 hits and 3 walks while striking out seven, but did not qualify for the win. Reliever Payne Stolsworth (1-1) then got the win tossing 2 and 1/3 scoreless innings of relief with a strikeout. Freshman reliever Hunter Hill also threw 2 innings allowing one run on one hit and 4 walks while senior pitcher Drew Tubb closed it out with a perfect ninth on 2 strikeouts.

Shortstop Tyson Bass led off the 6th inning with a solo home run, his team-best 10th on the year while finishing with 2 walks and 4 runs scored as he reached base 4 times. Morgan then went 3 for 5 with 3 RBIs and a double while outfielder Zach Lyon led the team with 4 hits on the day. Morgan is now hitting a team-best .411 on the year. 

GAME 3: NCWC 13, MBU 2

Wesleyan got off to another quick start in the second game of the day leading 6-0 after three innings on two RBI singles from senior 1B Travis Cross and a three-run homer from junior catcher Jaiden Barker in the 2nd inning. The Bishops then scored 4 runs in the 5th inning on a hit by pitch RBI to Barker and a bases-loaded walk to Bass. A sacrifice fly from Morgan was then followed by Barker scoring on a passed ball as the team batted around again in the 5th to take a 10-1 lead.

An RBI double from Cross was followed by an RBI single from Barker to make it 12-2 after six innings before Morgan's run-scoring single made it 13-2 in the 8th while RF Cord Butler was thrown out at home trying to score from first. Cross led the offense with four hits in the game while Barker drove in 5 runs and scored three with two hits. CF Drifton Padgett also had a 3 for 4 day at the plate scoring four runs. 

Senior starter Kevin Williams (2-1) then got the win throwing 5 and 1/3 innings allowing 2 runs on 4 hits while walking five but striking out four and lowered his ERA to 2.67. Junior reliever Clayton Gilmore then tossed 1 and 2/3 scoreless innings while fellow junior reliever Chandler Padgett closed out the game with two shutout innings striking out four.

Wesleyan is now 23-14 on the year and 15-3 in conference as they sit tied with Methodist for first place in the East Division. The two rivals will now square off next weekend in the final series of the season to determine who will host the East Division 4-team playoffs in May.

The first game of the MU-NCWC series will take place Friday evening at 6 PM in Fayetteville.
