ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - The top seeded NC Wesleyan College Baseball team used a terrific complete game performance from senior Pitcher of the Year Derrick Carter to roll to an 8-4 win over 4th seeded Piedmont University in the First Round of the USA South Tournament on Thursday from Bauer Field.

The Bishops improve to 26-15 with the tournament win and will now host #3 seed Pfeiffer University on Friday at 12:30 PM in the second round. Piedmont will first play #2 seed Huntingdon in an elimination game at 9:00 Am Friday morning from Bauer Field.

Wesleyan used a 14-hit attack to get the win led by three hits apiece from infielders Davie Morgan and Jackson Hobbs while Hobbs drove in three runs.

The Bishops got out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning taking advantage of three Piedmont errors. Wesleyan scored on a Hobbs two-run double while DH Travis Cross also drove in a run on an RBI single.

Wesleyan would then add one more run in the 2nd inning scoring on a Morgan RBI single that brought home RF Cord Butler. Carter then made his only mistake of the day in the third inning as Piedmont's all-conference CF Carter Ballstadt launched a three-run homer to make it 5-3.

After Piedmont scored on a Bishop error in the 4th inning to get within one at 5-4, Wesleyan came back with two insurance runs in the 6th on a wild pitch and RBI groundout to lead 7-4. The Bishops then added their final run in the 7th inning on a Cross RBI double.

Carter improved to 8-2 on the year with his 9-inning gem as he struck out a career high 13 batters while walking just three and allowing only 3 earned runs on 9 hits. Carter got stronger as the game wore on mowing down the Lions over the final four frames striking out five and allowing just one hit.

Carter continues to lead the conference in ERA at 2.58 and strikeouts with 96.
