MISENHEIMER, N.C. - The N.C. Wesleyan College men's basketball dropped a heartbreaking double overtime thriller 139-131 on the road at conference foe Pfeiffer University (N.C.) on Saturday evening.
The Bishops set another school record for points in a game with 131 breaking the old mark set in the last meeting with Pfeiffer in January where NCWC scored 128 points in the overtime victory.
The men were led by five players scoring in double-figures including four scoring at least 20 points led by A.J. Frye's season-high of 37 points, the most by any Bishop this season. Frye also tallied 14 rebounds for his 8th double-double.
The men held a slim 107-104 lead with less than 30 seconds to play in regulation before a three from Pfeiffer sent the game to overtime. The two schools then scored 9 points apiece in the first overtime before Pfeiffer got the edge outscoring Wesleyan 23-15 in the second extra session.
Senior point guard Chris Braswell also had a stellar game as he shot 70 percent from three (7 of 10) posting 28 points with 9 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals and a block. Fellow senior Robert Wilson also had a great game scoring 27 points with 7 rebounds and 2 assists.
Sophomore guard Damon McDowell then recorded his season-high for points as he scored 24 on 5 of 10 shooting from outside the arc along with another season-high of 12 rebounds, 3 assists, a steal, and a block. His double-double was officially his first of the season as he also recorded one in the exhibition loss to High Point. Sophomore Guard Josh Covington was the last member of the Bishops to finish in double figure scoring finishing with 13 points and 2 assists.
The men ended up shooting 45.7 percent from three making 16 treys while Pfeiffer made 17 threes but shot only 37 percent from deep. Each team also shot 47 percent from the floor overall making 44 shots exactly on each side with Pfeiffer's 7 extra free throws becoming the main difference.
The Bishops fall to 18-5 overall and 11-4 in the conference with the loss while Pfeiffer improves to 11-12 and 6-10 in the league.
Wesleyan is back in action on Wednesday evening as they return home to host Peace University at 7:30 PM on Senior Night.
