Men Oust Averett 78-72 behind Pettiford's Late 3

DANVILLE, Va. - The NC Wesleyan College men's basketball team used a late three-pointer from sophomore G/F Tim Pettiford to help the Bishops put away conference rival Averett University 78-72 on the road Wednesday afternoon.

Pettiford finished with 15 points and 5 rebounds on 5 of 6 shooting to help Wesleyan improve to 6-3 overall and 3-0 in USA South play.

Senior wing Damon McDowell led all Bishops with 17 points along with 3 assists while junior forward Isaiah Lewis scored 16 on 7 of 14 shooting along with team-highs in assists with 5, steals with 3 and blocks with 3.

Junior power forward Sal-Bey Young also finished in double-digit scoring with 11 points and a team-best 6 rebounds along with 2 assists and a block. Freshman guard and last week's Rookie of the Week Khalid Chavis-Hinds also scored 12 points on 4 of 4 shooting off the bench. Chavis-Hinds contributed 3 assists and 2 steals in the win as well.

Wesleyan shot 50 percent overall for the game including 69.6 percent in the second half when they put up 51 points. They held Averett to just 25 points in the first half on 32 percent shooting as well.

Averett falls to 0-2 overall and 0-1 in USA South play.

The Bishops return to action on Friday when they come home to Rocky Mount to host William Peace at 4:30 Pm.
