McDowell's 33 points and Game-Winning layup helps Bishops Upend Peace

RALEIGH, N.C. - The NC Wesleyan men's basketball team used a game-winning layup from senior Damon McDowell to rally all the way back from a big first half deficit to defeat William Peace 82-81 on the road Sunday.

McDowell scored 33 points on 14 of 23 shooting and four 3-pointers to lead the Bishops, his second straight 30+ point game. 

Wesleyan now improves to 8-3 overall and 5-0 in the conference.

Wesleyan trailed 46-26 to the Pacers (2-6, 1-5) at halftime after struggling to shoot the ball in the first half at just 24 percent with no threes. However, Wesleyan would storm back shooting 63 percent in the second half with 6 threes to outscore Peace 56-35 and grab the one-point victory. McDowell scored 25 second-half points to lead the Bishops.

The comeback win also featured a 20-1 run  over six minutes to get the Bishops within 2 points (60-62) with under 8 minutes to go.

Also playing well was freshman guard Marquis Eskew as he scored 16 points on 7 of 9 shooting off the bench. Fellow freshman guard Khalid Chavis-Hinds added 7 points with 4 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 steals off the bench as well.

Defensively, junior forward Sal-Bey Young led Wesleyan with 10 rebounds as well as 4 assists and a team-best 4 steals to go with his 6 points while junior Isaiah Lewis also added 7 points and 6 rebounds. Sophomore forward Tim Pettiford contributed 8 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 blocks in the comeback win as well. 

Wesleyan returns to action on Wednesday afternoon when they come home to host Averett at 3:00 PM.
