SAVANNAH, Ga. - The NC Wesleyan College Golf Team opened their season on Monday and Tuesday at Savannah Harbor, GA at the Savannah Invitational that featured 8 total USA South schools competing.

Wesleyan ended up placing 14th overall with a 3-round score of 943 (79-over par). Wesleyan improved their score each day. They first shot a 36-over par 324 in round one on Monday morning before improving by eight shots Monday afternoon to shoot 316. The Bishops then came back Tuesday morning to better their previous score by 13 shots shooting a 15-over 303.

Methodist won the event at -8 under par while Guilford College had the individual medalist at -13 under par.

Junior captain Frankie Schmitt led the Bishops with his 1-over par 217 total score as he placed 14th out of 8o golfers. Schmitt began round one shooting a 2-under par 70 before following that up with a 1-under 71 in round two. He then shot a 4-over 76 on Tuesday but still finished with a very respectable score of 1-over par.

Freshman Santiago Larumbe then placed next for the Bishops in 63rd place with his three-round score of 22-over par 238. Larumbe also improved from his first round 81 to shoot two straight sub-80 rounds of golf with a 78 and a 79. Fellow junior captain Patricio Basta then came next for the Bishops in 69th place with a score of 247. Basta improved his score from each round as well shooting 86-83-78.

Next was freshman Augustin Spangenberg who had the most extreme scores on the team. After shooting the highest score on the team on Monday afternoon in round two, Spangenberg then came back to shoot a team-best 2-under par 70 on Tuesday to improve by 25 strokes. However, his high scores of 87 and 95 on Monday led to his lower placement unfortunately.

Sophomore Luis Zurita then wrapped up the scoring for Wesleyan as he shot rounds of 93-84 and 85 for a total of 262.

The Bishop Golfers will next return to the links in two weeks when they make the short trek to Barton College on March 22-23 for the Barton Invitational in Wilson.
