Bishop Men Roll Past Drew 5-0 in NCAA Opener

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - The NC Wesleyan College men's tennis team won their second round match of the NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Championship on Friday morning shutting out Drew University (N.J.) 5-0 on their home courts in Rocky Mount.

The men, 21-2 and ranked 2nd in the South Region, now advance on to the Regional Final (Sweet 16) on Saturday at Noon to face Johns Hopkins University. JHU (9-0) defeated Farmingdale St. College (N.Y.) 5-0 as well Friday morning.

The Bishops got off to a good start by sweeping the doubles to take a 3-0 match lead. The #3 doubles pairing of junior Max Robinson and freshman Valentin Mussi led the way with an 8-0 shutout of Drew while the national qualifying #1 doubles team of juniors Jhonny Acosta and JP Vallejo then cruised 8-2 in their match. The #2 doubles team of senior Roberto Puig and freshman John Falke also won 8-2.

*Acosta and Vallejo (13-2) will compete in the NCAA Doubles Championships from May 28-30 from the Champions Tennis Club in Chattanooga, TN.

Falke and sophomore Augusto Roca then clinched the 5-point win for the Bishops as they dominated their singles bouts with Falke winning first 6-0, 6-0 at the 4 spot while Roca won 6-0, 6-1  at the fifth spot.

Puig and Vallejo also each won their first sets 6-1 while Acosta and Mussi won 6-0 in each of their opening sets before their matches were called due to clinching the win.
