Softball Sweeps their Way Past Mary Baldwin

STAUNTON, Va. - The NC Wesleyan College softball team rolled past Mary Baldwin on the road in game one of their doubleheader on Saturday winning it 12-1 in five innings before winning a close game two 4-3 in 8 innings.

Senior outfielder Nichole Mooney led the Bishops with three hits and 4 runs scored while 1B/pitcher Beth Braswell also drove in two runs.

Leading in runs batted in was senior shortstop Meredith Mize with 3 RBIs, two runs scored, and two hits while outfielders Logan Winstead and Chelsea Nixon also recorded two hits apiece. Mooney and Mize recorded the two extra base hits as well hitting doubles. Molivas, Bryona Knight, Meredith Booth, and Myers also recorded hits for the Bishops in the win.

 Beth Braswell pitched all five innings allowing only 5 hits and one unearned run on a walk and 4 strikeouts.

GAME 2:

Wesleyan then won game two 4-3 in 8 innings scoring two runs in the top of the 8th after the schools were tied at 2 after 7 innings. Senior pitcher Grace Preston started the game for the Bishops and threw 4 innings allowing 3 hits and 2 runs (1 earned) on a walk and 2 strikeouts. Braswell (4-1) would then come on in relief of Preston in the 5th and toss the final four innings allowing just 2 hits and one run with 3 strikeouts to close the game and pick up her 4th win.  

Mooney again led the Bishops in hits with two including a double while Mize drove in a run on her RBI triple. Braswell also drove in a run on a sac fly while senior DH Kayla Molivas and junior 3B Brianna Myers each knocked RBI singles as well. Mooney continues to lead the team  in batting average at .444 as well.

The Lady Bishops improve to 5-3 on the season and 2-0 in the conference while MBU falls to 0-6 overall.

Wesleyan returns to action on Tuesday at Mary Washington University at 2 PM.
