RALEIGH, N.C. - The NC Wesleyan College softball team dropped a pair of games on the road at conference rival William Peace University on Wednesday afternoon. WPU pulled away late to take game one 5-1 before winning a pitcher's duel 1-0 in game two.

GAME 1: WPU 5, NCWC 1

Bishop freshman starter Emily Humphrey took a no-hitter into the 4th inning before Peace broke the scoreless tie with a solo home run. Wesleyan then tied the game in the 6th on 3B Molly Alejandrino's RBI single that brought home freshman LF Skyler Walker.

However, WPU would finally get to Humphrey in the 6th inning scoring 4 runs to put the game out of reach. Humphrey (7-5) would finish allowing 5 runs (3 earned) on 8 hits and 3 walks while striking out three over 6 innings.

Walker led the offense notching two hits while also stealing a base.

GAME 2: WPU 1, NCWC 0

The game two pitcher's duel remained scoreless through 4 innings until WPU broke through in the 5th inning scoring on an RBI single off Wesleyan freshman starter Laila Holloway.

Wesleyan then could not cash on numerous late-inning opportunities first leaving catcher MK Raynor on 2nd base after a leadoff double in the 5th. NCWC then ran into a big out on the bases after back-to-back singles in the 6th from senior SS Meredith Mize and Alejandrino. Finally, in the 7th, Wesleyan had runners at the corners with two outs, but could not cash in for the tie.

Holloway threw all 6 innings allowing just one run on 4 hits and 2 walks to get the hard-luck loss falling to 3-4 on the year. Walker, senior Logan Winstead and freshman 2B Alexis Whitfield all stole bases in the loss as well.

With the tough-luck losses, the Bishops fall to 3-5 in the conference and 13-13 overall while WPU improves to 20-7 and 8-2 in the league.

The softball team will now return home to host Mary Baldwin University on Saturday at 2:00 PM.
