ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - The NC Wesleyan College softball team split with conference rival Methodist at home on Wednesday afternoon. The Bishops and freshman starter Emily Humphrey first shut out MU in game one 2-0 before falling 9-5 in 9 innings in game two.

GAME 1: NCWC 2, MU 0

A scoreless game through 4 innings saw the Bishops finally break through in the 5th inning as Humphrey singled in freshman 2B Alexis Whitfield who had bunted to reach base safely. Wesleyan then added an insurance run in the 6th on 1B Abby Todd's sacrifice fly that scored senior SS Meredith Mize. Outfielders Skyler Walker and Logan Winstead also recorded hits along with Mize in the win.

Humphrey then did the rest as she threw 7 shutout innings to win her third consecutive game by allowing just 4 hits and walking one while striking out seven to improve to 11-5 and lower her ERA to 3.13.

GAME 2: MU 9, NCWC 5

The second game of the doubleheader then started ominously for the Bishops as their two first-inning runs were erased by runner's interference. Winstead and Walker had reached base via a walk and single and advanced to 2nd and third on stolen bases and eventually scored on a throwing error from Methodist, but had the runs taken off the board by the overturned call.

The game would then remain scoreless until the third inning when Mize drove in Winstead for the first run and Walker tripled in Mize for the second. MU then tied it in the 5th on an error off freshman starter Laila Holloway before Wesleyan scored the go-ahead run in the 6th inning on Whitfield's RBI groundout.

The Lady Monarchs then rallied for a run off reliever Humphrey in the 7th inning to push the game to extras. The teams then traded runs inthe 8th inning before MU broke out for 5 runs inthe 9th to grab the win. Holloway threw 5 innings allowing 2 runs on 7 hits with no walks or strikeouts while Humphrey (11-6) threw the final four frames allowing 3 earned runs on 5 hits and 3 walks and a strikeout.

Walker and DH Brianna Myers led the Bishops with two-hit games while Whitfield drove in two runs.

The Lady Bishops are now 18-16 on the season and 8-8 in the conference while Methodist goes to 18-19 overall and 10-6 in the conference.

The women remain home to host Salem college on Saturday on Senior Day as they look to punch their ticket to the conference playoffs next Tuesday.
