Wesleyan Women Rally to Knock off MBU in Overtime

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - The NC Wesleyan College Women's Basketball team rallied from behind to force overtime and then oust rival Mary Baldwin University 91-87 at home Sunday afternoon.

The women improve to 4-1 on the year and 2-0 in the conference.

Senior guard Cydney Nichols led the Bishops with 24 points in the win while junior forward Javana Jones scored 14 including the game-tying basket to force overtime. Senior Kayla Johnson's free down the stretch of overtime then clinched the win for Wesleyan as part of her 16 point game.

Mary Baldwin got off to a strong start in the first half shooting 60 percent from three-point range in the first half as the Squirrels would take a 40-36 lead at the break.

Neither team would lead by more than eight for the entire game while Wesleyan's first lead did not come until the final minutes of regulation. MBU then led 61-53 heading into the fourth quarter until the Bishops finished the quarter on a 25-17 run to force overtime.

MBU (0-2) would then go up 87-85 with 1:20 to go in overtime before back-to-back layups from Jones and Johnson gave Wesleyan the lead at 89-87. Johnson's free throws would then seal the win for the Bishops and the weekend sweep of the Squirrels.

Sophomore forward Kayrisma Harrison finished with 7 points and 8 rebounds while senior forward Myrayna Watkins scored 9 with 8 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 steals. Senior guard Keorra Taylor also led with 6 assists.

The Bishops will next be in action on Friday when they head to Raleigh to battle William Peace at 7:30 PM.
