Bishop Women Squeak Past Pacers

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - The NC Wesleyan College women's basketball team edged their way past conference rival William Peace 62-59 at home on Sunday afternoon to sweep the season series from the Pacers.

Each team struggled shooting the ball throughout the game as Peace shot just 33 percent in the first half while the Bishops shot 25 percent as they led just 30-28 at the break after holding the Pacers to just 11 points in the second quarter.

Wesleyan then picked up the offense in the third quarter shooting 53 percent to take it 17-13 and lead 47-41. The foes would then stay neck-and-neck through the fourth as neither team led by more than seven. Peace would take their final lead of the game at 59-58 with 16 seconds to play until free throws from senior guard Cydney Nichols, forward Kayrisma Harrison and freshman Johnay Goddard clinched the win for Wesleyan.

Nichols led Wesleyan with 14 points and a team-best 4 steals while fellow senior guard Keorra Taylor tied her season-high with 12 points along with 5 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals and a block.

Senior forward Myrayna Watkins then posted her third double-double of the season with 10 points and a team-high 10 rebounds while the sophomore Harrison also scored 11 points with 8 rebounds and a block. Goddard also scored 5 points with 3 rebounds.

Wesleyan improves to 6-1 on the season and remain undefeated at 4-0 in the conference. Peace falls to 2-2.

The Bishops return to action Friday when they host Pfeiffer University (N.C.) inside Everett Gym at 6:30 PM.
