DANVILLE, Va. - The NC Wesleyan College women's soccer team held off conference rival Averett 2-1 on the road on Wednesday afternoon.

Junior midfielder Claire Bailey scored the first goal of the game for the Bishops just 10 minutes into the game on a breakaway goal down the right side off an assist from senior midfielder Madison Stace.

Wesleyan then padded their lead 16 minutes later on a goal from Stace off a corner kick on an assist from sophomore MF Sophia Sweeney. Wesleyan led 6-3 in shots in the first half.

Averett then trimmed Wesleyan's lead to one with their goal 3 minutes into the second half as they beat a charging Alicia Jacobs in goal.

Jacobs, a senior GK, played well though as she teamed with the rest of the Lady Bishop team to hold the cougars scoreless for the rest of the half and grab the win. Jacobs finished with 5 saves on 6 shots on goal.

Wesleyan improves to 2-1 in the conference while Averett falls to 0-3 in conference. The Lady Bishops are next in action on Saturday when they go on the road to face Pfeiffer at 1:00 PM.
