The NC Wesleyan College Volleyball program is doing an alumni spotlight series. The fourth alum we are profiling is 2019 graduate Kelly Ammons

During her senior campaign, Ammons finished with 387 assists (3.2 per set) as well as 17 service aces and 176 digs. She ranked in the top 4 on the team in each category in 2019.

Ammons finished her Wesleyan career with 893 assists and 402 digs.

Prior to coming to Wesleyan, Ammons attended Corinth Holders High School in Zebulon, N.C. graduating in 2015 where she lettered in volleyball.

What was your major at NCWC?

My major was business administration with a concentration in healthcare administration.

What are you up to now?

I am currently working remotely for a software company (TVU Networks) that is based out of Raleigh. We do have an office in Raleigh and I was there for a month and then covid hit so we have been working from home since March 2020. I am a sales associate who supports our sales guys in creating quotes, processing orders - domestically and internationally - and invoicing customers for the equipment that they have from us.

Do you have a favorite memory with your teammates or even NCWC in general?

My favorite memory with my teammates is probably the Chick-Fil-A trips that we would always take after our away games. There was no doubt in our minds that we were getting anything other than Chick-Fil-A after an away game, and we would always argue on who would get to scan their app on their phone to get the most points from the whole team's orders.

How did being a student-athlete here at NCWC help prepare you for life after graduation?

Being a student athlete at NCWC helped me prepare for life after graduation in many ways. The biggest way I would have to say is time management. Working from home is a little different, but when I was going into the office, I would have to figure out what time to get up and go to work and what the best time to beat traffic was, which is similar to class in a way. Also, prioritizing what needs to be addressed and completed on my to do list for the day is something similar to figuring out what tests/homework needs my attention first and being a collegiate athlete certainly helped me in how to manage my time in the best way possible.

I can also say that being an athlete has helped me in the fact that we did not have the option of PTO to take to get out of practice. Practice and games were a priority for me and a commitment that I signed up for when I started playing college volleyball and so that has carried over to my job because it even though I do have the option of PTO and taking days off, it is my responsibility to be present and to do my job to the best of my ability everyday, just like in volleyball.

Which opponent did you enjoy playing against throughout your career? Why?

I think my favorite opponent to play against would have to be William Peace. I say this because every year that we played them, I had friends on that team that I played high school or club with and it was just fun to be on the other side of the net competing against them instead of playing on the same team.

Also, I always enjoyed the environment at both gyms. Peace always had big crowds come out for both teams and it is such a small gym that the energy was just fun to be around, even if most of it was against us. As for our gym at NCWC, we always had so many students come out to watch and cheer us on when we played Peace. Their energy was always unmatched when the game would get intense. I miss the game and my girls so much...and coaches Vicky Gentile and Cory Soble of course.
