NCWC Releases Winter Sports Awards

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - The NC Wesleyan College Athletic Dept. has announced their winter sports awards on Tuesday. The awards being handed out are for Most Valuable Player (MVP), Scholar-Athlete Award and the Moe Bauer Sportsmanship Award in the sports of Men's and Women's Basketball and Cheerleading.

--The Battling Bishop Men's Basketball team, led by coach John Thompson, gave out their MVP award to senior 2nd team all-conference center A.J. Frye. Taking home the scholar-athlete award was senior Mitch Layton, who majored in Biomedical science and was a winner of last year's Jim Sabiston Award (picture below). Finally, the men's sportsmanship award also went to Layton.

--The Women's Basketball team, led by coach Artina Trader, had dual MVP winners as the award was shared by leading scorer and first team all-conference guard Kayla Johnson as well as junior forward Myrayna Watkins. The sportsmanship award was then given to senior Leah Wright while the scholar-athlete award went to junior Cydney Nichols, who majors in Criminal Justice while also playing on the soccer team.

--Finally, the Cheer/Dance team, led by coaches Pete and Lyndsey Graham handed out their awards as well. Their MVP went to sophomore Victoria Mayer while their scholar-athlete was junior Maria Padron, majoring in Pre-Med. Winning the sportsmanship award was then senior Sarah Western.

 

Wednesday's announcement will bring the Spring Sports Awards.
