Bishop Hoopsters Split at League Rival Methodist

Fayetteville, N.C. - The men's and women's basketball teams of N.C. Wesleyan turned in a split with league rival Methodist University on Wednesday night in Fayetteville. The Battling Bishop women dropped a 77-70 decision to the Lady Monarchs, but Wesleyan's men followed up with a 90-77 victory in the late game to even their record at 12-12 on the season.

In the men's game, the Bishops led just 71-69 with under five minutes remaining, and it looked to be either team's game down the stretch. Sophomore D.J. Weaver, however, drained a deep trey at the 4:34 mark to ignite a 15-4 run that gave his Bishops an 86-73 lead with under a minute left. The run saw NCWC go 6-for-6 at the charity stripe, which was stretched to a 10-for-10 showing in the final 34 seconds.

Senior Josh Morrison paced the Bishops with 21 points, and he was joined in double figures by sophomore Devontae Williams with 17 points on 6-for-6 shooting from the floor. Weaver and senior David Gurganus chipped in 15 and 11, respectively, while sophomore Shannon Huff added 13 points and eight rebounds of the bench.

On the women's side, the Bishops took a 62-58 lead on a Monet Edwards lay-up with 3:47 to go. Unfortunately, the Monarchs were able to capitalize on several Wesleyan miscues with an 11-0 run that put them up 69-62 with a minute left. The run proved too much to overcome for the Bishops, who got no closer than three points down the stretch.

Senior Tiffany Bell and freshman Kenyata Harris each netted 15 points, while NeTaih Davis and Shanice Goree added 12 and 11, respectively. Harris completed the double-double with ten boards.

Both teams wrap up their regular season schedules this weekend in Everett Gym. Wesleyan's women will host Mary Baldwin College at 2:00pm on Saturday, which will be followed by a doubleheader with Ferrum College on Sunday at 1:00pm and 3:00pm. Sunday will serve as Senior Day for both teams.
