Wesleyan Sweeps USA South Men's Tennis Awards

Fayetteville, N.C. - The USA South Athletic Conference has released its 2013 postseason awards for men's tennis, with total of 25 student-athletes being named to the All-Conference teams. N.C. Wesleyan swept the individual awards as Artsiom Prostak was named Player of the Year, Johan Ljungdahl was tabbed Rookie of the Year, and Worth Richardson picked up Coach of the Year honors.

Prostak, a senior from Minsk, Belarus, played primarily at the number-two singles position throughout the season with two matches at the top-spot. He was undefeated against USA South opposition, posting a 3-0 record. At the top-doubles spot, Prostak has earned an 18-8 overall record with a 4-0 mark in league action. For his efforts, Prostak earned First Team All-Conference honors.

Said Richardson, "While several of the guys were certainly capable of being Player of the Year, it is great to see Prostak recognized as he is an immensely talented player who has been under the radar most of his career.  His play and leadership have been key to our success this season."

A freshman from Stockholm, Sweden, Ljungdahl has compiled a 14-4 overall record in dual matches with a perfect 8-0 mark in USA South play while playing at the number-one, two and three singles positions. At the top-two doubles positions, Ljungdahl posted an 8-0 record versus USA South competition. He, too, collected First Team All-Conference honors, as well as serving as the Battling Bishops' representative on the All-Sportsmanship Team.

"Johan has been a great addition to our team," commented Richardson. "He is such a great competitor and handles every opponent and match with class and professionalism. I can say coaching Johan has been nothing but a pleasure thanks to his talent, work ethic and demeanor."

Richardson, in his first year at the helm of N.C. Wesleyan, received his first USA South Men's Tennis Coach of the Year honor. Richardson has helped guide the Bishops to an 11-7 overall record and a perfect 8-0 mark in conference action. With the unblemished league record for the fifth consecutive season, N.C. Wesleyan earned the program's eighth regular season title. The Bishops enter the USA South Tournament as the top-seeded team and four-time defending champions.

Also earning recognition were junior Robert Kjellberg and sophomore Peter Hviid. Kjellberg, who is the top-ranked player in the Atlantic South region, has already set a new program-record with 23 singles wins on the season, while Hviid went a perfect 7-0 in USA South play.

Added Richardson, "I am glad to see Robert earn First Team All-Conference honors despite being unable to play many of our conference matches due to the amount of tennis he played in his tremendous fall season.  Not only did he take top honors at the ITA Regional at Emory University and the UVA Fall Invite, but he also posted a runner-up finish at the Division III ITA National Championships in Mobile."

He continued, "Peter has stepped up as a sophomore and grown a lot as a competitor, going undefeated in singles and doubles in conference play. We are very proud and honored by the awards other coaches in the USA South Conference have given to us."
