Men's Tennis Puts Away Averett to advance to Final

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - The top seeded NC Wesleyan College men's tennis team defeated rival Averett 7-2 in the East Division Final on Sunday from the Slick Family Tennis Center to advance to next week's USA South Tournament final.

Wesleyan improves to 19-2 on the season with their 19th straight win and will next host West #1 seed Covenant College on Saturday at 2 PM from Rocky Mount.

The Bishops got out to a 3-0 lead after the doubles as the top duo of juniors Juan Vallejo and Jhonny Acosta edged their foes 8-6. Senior Roberto Puig and freshman John Falke then won 8-3 at the two line while junior Max Robinson and freshman Valentin Mussi won 8-2 at the three line.

Acosta and Falke then clinched the win for the Bishops with their straight set wins at the #3 and #4 singles spots. Acosta dominated by way of 6-0 and 6-2 scores while Falke took it 6-2, 6-0.

Sophomores Tshepo Mosarwa and Augusto Roca then each won their singles matches at the 5 and 6 line, 7-5, 6-0 and 6-2, 6-2 respectively. Vallejo dropped a hard-fought match at the two line 3-6, 5-7 as well.

The 2021 USA South Men's Tennis Tournament's first round has concluded with the top seeded teams from each division advancing to the championship match. In the East Division, top-seeded N.C. Wesleyan defeated second-seeded Averett, 7-2, while the West Division's top-seed Covenant slid past second-seeded Piedmont, 5-4.

The finals of the tournament will be played in Rocky Mount, North Carolina and hosted by N.C. Wesleyan on Saturday, May 1.
