Men's Tennis Loses Thrilling Match to D-1 Creighton

ORLANDO, Fla. - The 9th ranked NC Wesleyan College men's tennis team dropped a thrilling match to Div. I Creighton University 4-3 on Thursday in Orlando at the USTA National Campus.

Wesleyan started off down 1-0 after doubles as they dropped the best of three doubles matches 2-1. The top doubles team of Jhonny Acosta and JP Vallejo fell 6-4 while the third team of junior Tshepo Mosarwa and freshman Diego Segovia also fell 6-4. However, John Falke and Roberto Puig teamed up to win 7-6 in their doubles match.

In singles, freshman Luca Knese won his bout 7-5, 6-4 at the 6th line while Segovia fell 6-3, 6-3 at the 5th line as CU led 2-1. The other four singles matches all went to three sets with each team winning two bouts each as CU went on to win the dual 4-3.

After dropping the first set 0-6, Puig then rallied to steal the match 6-2 and 10-7 at the 4 line while junior Augusto Roca then also rallied from behind to win 1-6, 6-3 and dominated 10-1 in the third set tiebreak.

Finally at the top two lines, Acosta and Falke would each split their first two sets before both falling 10-7 in third set tiebreaks.

Wesleyan suffers their first loss of the season falling to 10-1 overall, but still remains unbeaten against D-2 and D-3 competition while Creighton, out of the Big East, improved to 6-5.

The Bishops had their second match of the day canceled against Radford and will next battle NAIA foe St. Thomas at 3 pm on Friday in their final match of the Orlando tournament.
