Men's Tennis Defeats St. Thomas 5-2

ORLANDO, FL - The #9 NC Wesleyan College men's tennis team ousted NAIA foe St. Thomas University (Fla.) 5-2 on Friday evening in their final match of the week-long Spring Break Tournament at the USTA National Campus in Orlando.

The match was counted as an exhibition for the Bishops as they remain 10-1 on the season. STU falls to 6-5 overall.

Wesleyan led 1-0 after doubles as sophomore John Falke and senior Roberto Puig teamed up to win 6-4 at the top line while juniors Tshepo Mosarwa and Thato Holmes also won 7-5 at the second line. Sophomore Joaquin Micheloni and senior Valentin Aniceto then fell 6-2 at the third line.

3rd ranked Jhonny Acosta then gave the Bishops a 2-0 lead as he dominated at the top singles line winning 6-1 6-1. After an Augusto Roca loss at the fourth line made it 2-1, Puig stepped up and won 6-4, 6-3 at the third line to give Wesleyan the third team point. Freshman Luca Knese then clinched the win for the Bishops earning the 4th team point with his 6-1, 6-2 victory.

Senior JP Vallejo then dropped a hard-fought third set tiebreak 10-2 at the #2 line after winning his frist set 7-6 but dropping the second 7-5. With the match already clinched, freshman Diego Segovia then competed in a super set and won his bout 8 games to four to give the Bishops the final point.

Note: The Wesleyan Women's match vs. St. Thomas was canceled on Friday due to rain.

The Bishop men will next return to action next Saturday, March 19 when they head to CNU (Va.) for a Noon matchup.
