Bishops Get Off to Hot Start at Grand Slam Classic

Raleigh, NC - The NC Wesleyan softball team got off to a great start at the Grand Slam Classic by sweeping two games over Elmira and Maryville.

In game 1, Emily Humphrey took the ball for Wesleyan and got off to a rocky start giving up 5 in the first. However, she would not allow another run for the remainder of the game and the Bishop's offense exploded. Lillie Baumbach had a 5 RBI day out of the lead-off spot. She went deep with a grand slam in the 5th inning, which happened to be the last at-bat of the contest. Skyler Walker, who bats right behind Baumbach in the order also had a monster 3 RBI game.

Walker went 2/2 on the afternoon with a 3-run home run for Wesleyan. A key stat to the game is the Lady Bishops scored multiple in every inning during the game and only gave up two hits the entire 5 innings. Humphrey also had an impressive stat line on the mound striking out 8 in 5 innings with only 2 hits.

In game 2, Wesleyan had a battle with the Maryville Scots. In a 4-2 pitcher's dual that favored the Lady Bishops, center fielder Lillie Baumbach had a hot start for the top of the order. Baumbach accounted for all 4 runs in some fashion. She drove in two of the 4 RBI's for Wesleyan and scored 2 runs herself. Mary Katherine Raynor also contributed a hit, RBI, and a run scored to help solidify the 4-2 victory. In the extra-inning affair, Morgan Aycock was outstanding on the mound. She threw all 8 innings for the Bishops and only allowed 2 hits while striking out 5 Scots.

The Lady Bishops improve to 4-2 on the season and will continue competing in the Grand Slam Classic this weekend.
